Introduction to tuberculosis and the growing problem of drug resistance

UCL Eastman Dental Institute
America/Sao_Paulo GMT -3

Description

Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent worldwide according to the World Health Organisation. Only in 2018, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of TB, infected 10 million people and caused 1.5 million deaths (WHO TB report 2019).

The spread of multidrug resistant TB (MDR-TB) remains a public health crisis and a health security threat as it is the further appearance of extensively resistant TB (XDR-TB).

The treatment of these resistant strains of TB is long, with severe side effects and the success rates are low. This highlights the urgent need to better understand the fundamental biology of this bacterium in order to develop new drugs effective at treating drug resistant infections as well as characterise some of the existing drugs that have escaped the development of resistance in the clinic.

In this webinar, Dr Dimitrios Evangelopoulos will describe the problem of TB, the emergence of drug resistance and he will present examples from his research towards the development of new therapeutics for TB.
