Welcome to RefTalks Winter Series - 2023! We are delighted to have an ENT webinar in February. The topics are: Topic 1: “Throat Cancers: Does the Head & Neck Cancer Risk Calculator work?” Topic 2: " Primary Prevention of Head & Neck Cancers -Brief Intervention Over the past 3 years, with input from primary and secondary care clinicians, NHS Lothian ENT has adopted a validated symptom based risk calculator for ‘throat’ referrals. The aim was to reduce the number of cancer patients referred out with the urgent suspicion of cancer pathway as well as improving resource utilisation. This webinar will summarise what we have learnt, and the evidence about changes in referral patterns during this time: does the calculator work and going forward how best can we help GPs assess such patients? The speakers hope to address questions and input the audience and users of the calculator in order to improve the experience for all. Many patients referred to ENT and Oral Surgery are high risk, and we will discuss an innovative programme for those who are ‘near misses’ for cancer to help them address risk factors at a time when they may be more motivated to do so.
